Man, I gotta tell you about this deep dive I did today into the 1978 USC football season. It was a wild ride, let me say!
So, I started out just poking around, you know, seeing what I could find about that year. I stumbled upon some articles talking about how they won big games and ended up sharing a national title. That piqued my interest, so I dug deeper.
I found this site that had all their stats and their schedule. Man, they played a tough lineup! I went through each game, reading about the highs and lows. It was a real rollercoaster.
A Season of Highs and Lows
- They kicked off the season ranked ninth. Not bad, right?
- I read about this one game where Jordan nailed a 21-yard field goal, putting USC in the lead early on. That must have been a nail-biter!
- Then there was this whole thing about their rivalry with Alabama. It was like a back-and-forth, with USC winning one year, then Alabama the next. In ’78, USC beat them 24-14. That’s a solid win!
But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. They faced off against nine ranked teams! That’s crazy! It seems like every game was a battle.
The Notre Dame Rivalry
And don’t even get me started on the Notre Dame games. Apparently, they’ve been playing each other since the 1920s. I learned that the modern series started in ’88. Who knew?
The Coach Behind It All
Then I stumbled upon some info about their coach, John Robinson. This guy sounds like a legend. One of his quarterbacks, Paul McDonald, talked about how demanding he was but also how great he was with people. That’s a rare combo.
By the time I finished my little research project, I felt like I’d lived through the whole season myself. It was intense! I realized that there’s so much more to football than just the scores. It’s about the players, the coaches, the rivalries, the ups and downs. It’s a whole story!
Anyway, that was my day. Just thought I’d share my journey through the 1978 USC football season with you. It was definitely an interesting one!
