Okay, so, I got this idea to make a ghillie suit, you know, those camouflage suits that snipers wear? I wanted a brown one, ’cause I thought it’d be perfect for the woods around here. And I decided I’m gonna do it all by myself. Let me tell you, it was a trip.
Getting Started
First, I needed to find something to use as a base. I dug around in my closet and found an old set of brown overalls that I didn’t wear anymore. That seemed like a good start. Then, for the actual camouflage part, I gathered a bunch of burlap sacks. You know, the kind they use for potatoes? I figured that would be the right color and texture.
The Messy Part
Next, I started cutting the burlap into strips. Man, that was a messy job. Burlap sheds like crazy. I was finding little brown fibers everywhere for days. I also found some old netting that I thought would be good. Then came the part where I had to attach all these strips to the overalls. I decided to sew them on, which, let me tell you, took forever. My fingers were so sore, but I’m not the kind of guy who gives up easily, so I kept at it.
Adding Some Details
After I had a good layer of burlap strips, I thought it still looked a bit too plain. So, I gathered some twigs, leaves, and some fake vines I bought from a crafts store. I used a hot glue gun to stick them on here and there, trying to make it look more like a natural part of the woods. I realized later that hot glue wasn’t such a good idea because the glue was just dripping.
Trying It Out
Finally, it was done. I put the whole thing on and went out into the woods behind my house. I crouched down in some bushes and asked my friend to try to spot me. He walked right past me a couple of times without even noticing! I gotta say, I was pretty proud of myself. I also realized it’s pretty good for paintball, and wildfowling. Even though it was itchy and hot, it worked like a charm.
In the end, it was a fun project, even though it was a lot of work. I learned a lot about sewing, and gluing, and making sure I can hide in plain sight. I’m ready to use it for hunting, which is pretty great! I even found some good ideas from people on some forums about other kinds of suits, like leaf suits. Next time, I might try one of those.
