Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get back into swimming for a while now, and I finally took the plunge, literally. I heard about this “Southeast Zone Masters Swimming” thing and figured, why not? Sounds fancy, right? Turns out, it’s just a bunch of adults who like to swim, just like me. No big deal.
First thing I did was find a local group. Turns out, there are tons of these Masters Swimming clubs all over the place. I just searched online, you know, the usual “Masters Swimming near me,” and boom, a bunch of options popped up. I picked one that was close to my place and had practice times that worked with my schedule. Easy peasy.
Next, I showed up. I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous. I haven’t seriously swam in years, and I was worried I’d be, like, the slowest one there. But everyone was super chill. The coach introduced himself, asked me about my swimming background, which is basically “I used to swim in high school, and now I mostly just float in the pool.”
Getting Back to Swimming
We started with a warm-up, you know, some easy laps to get the blood flowing. Then we did some drills, which was kind of a struggle. My technique is rusty, to say the least. But the coach was patient, gave me some pointers, and I slowly started to remember how to, you know, actually swim.
The workout itself was tough, but in a good way. We did some interval training, which means you swim hard for a bit, then rest for a bit, then repeat. It definitely pushed me, but I felt great afterward. I even stayed to chat with some of my lane mates. They’re all different ages and abilities, but everyone’s there for the same reason: to get a good workout and have some fun.
- Joined a local Masters Swimming group.
- Attended my first practice.
- Completed the warm-up and drills.
- Finished the interval training workout.
- Socialized with other swimmers after practice.
So yeah, that was my first experience with Southeast Zone Masters Swimming. It was way less intimidating than I thought it would be, and I actually had a blast. I’m definitely going back next week. If you’re thinking about getting back into swimming, I say go for it! Just find a group, show up, and jump in. You might surprise yourself.
