Okay, so I stumbled upon this thing called “hoopgrids” the other day, and let me tell you, it’s kind of addictive. I figured I’d walk you through how I got into it and what I’ve been doing with it.

It all started when I was, you know, just browsing around, looking for something to kill some time. I saw someone mention “hoopgrids” and I was like, “What’s that?” So, I did a quick search, and boom – I was down the rabbit hole.
My First Attempt
First, I just went straight to the main page to observe. I found that this is a 3×3 grid, and each row and column is some kind of basketball category. It could be two teams, like “Played for the Lakers and the Celtics,” or it could be a team and a stat, like “Played for the Bulls and averaged over 20 points per game.”
My very first try, I was completely guessing. I mean, I know some basketball, but I’m no expert. I think I got, like, two squares right, mostly by luck. It was still pretty fun, though. It’s kind of like a trivia game, but you also need to know which players fit into multiple categories. I quickly found myself getting it wrong more often than not.
Getting the Hang of It
After a few more rounds, I started to get a little better. I started to remember some more obscure players and their stats, and I started to think more strategically. Like, if I saw two teams in a row, I’d try to think of players who were traded between them, or maybe free agents who played for both. And when it gives you a hint, things get easier.
- Start with the Obvious: I found it is good to fill in the squares I knew for sure first. This helped me narrow down the possibilities for the harder ones.
- Use the Hints: There are hints, and that helps a lot.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Guess: Sometimes, I just had to take a wild guess, and surprisingly, I got it right a few times!
I also began to find some helpful resources that let me check player stats and team histories. It’s like, suddenly I cared about which random role player averaged 5 rebounds in the ’90s.
Still Playing
Honestly, I’m still playing this thing. It’s a fun little time-waster, and it’s actually making me learn more about basketball history. I’m not going to pretend I’m amazing at it, but I’m definitely getting better. And, hey, it’s a nice break from whatever else I’m supposed to be doing.
I would recommend it if you’re a basketball fan, or just want to play something.
