Okay, so I was trying to do something fun with my kid, and we decided to make a shark crossword puzzle. It sounded easy enough, but boy, was it a little more involved than I thought!

Getting Started
First, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil. I figured we’d start the old-fashioned way. I drew a basic grid, you know, the usual crossword squares. I didn’t make it too big, maybe 10×10, because, well, we’re not trying to create the Sunday New York Times crossword here.
Brainstorming Words
Then came the hard part – thinking of shark-related words! We started shouting out anything that came to mind:
- FIN
- GILLS
- TEETH
- OCEAN
- PREDATOR
- JAWS (of course!)
We jotted these down on a separate list. My kid was really getting into it, which was awesome.
Fitting Them In
This is where it got tricky. I started trying to fit the words into the grid. Some were short, some were long. I quickly realized I had to think about how the words would intersect. If “FIN” went across, then maybe “GILLS” could go down, sharing the “I”. It’s like a word jigsaw puzzle!
Clue Creation
Once I had a few words in place, I started on the clues. I didn’t want them to be too difficult, so I kept them pretty basic. Like, for “FIN”, I wrote “Shark’s steering thingy”. For “TEETH”, it was “Shark’s chompers”. You get the idea – simple and fun.
Trial and Error
There was a lot of erasing and rewriting. I moved words around, tried different combinations, and scribbled out a few failed attempts. Honestly, the paper was a mess by the end of it, but that’s part of the fun, right?
The Finished Product
Finally, after some serious brainpower (and a little help from my kid), we had a complete crossword! It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours. We made a clean copy, filled it in, and felt pretty proud of ourselves. It was a fun little project, and we both learned a thing or two about sharks (and crossword construction) along the way!
