Okay, so today I was doing the NYT crossword, and I got totally stuck on one clue: “top round steak.” I was like, “What the heck is that?” I consider myself a pretty decent cook, but I’m no butcher, you know?

First, I stared at the empty squares, racking my brain. Beef…steak…top…round… Nothing. Zilch. I tried to think of different cuts of meat, but my mind kept going back to the usual suspects: ribeye, sirloin, filet mignon. Nope, none of those fit.
Getting My Hands Dirty (with Research!)
So, I gave up on my own (limited) knowledge and grabbed my phone. I googled “top round steak” hoping for some kind of quick definition or something to pop up. The search show me some stuff, some cooking methods, synonyms, basically some background stuff. I kept it simple, though. I wanted to match this word up.
The “Aha!” Moment
After reading a bit, I understood. It had another name. One of the words I found on the search was “London broil”.Boom! Finally, I had solve it.
It was pretty satisfying to finally crack that clue. This whole thing reminded me that there’s always something new to learn, even about stuff you think you know, like cooking. And, hey, crosswords are a pretty fun way to learn new words, even if they make you feel a little dumb sometimes!
