Alright, let’s talk about this Pat Murphy fella and them Brewers. Heard he’s some kinda big shot now, won somethin’ called “Manager of the Year”. Don’t know much about that fancy stuff, but I reckon it means he did good with them baseball boys.
Now, they say he’s the first Brewers manager to get this award since way back in 1983. That’s a long time, even for an old woman like me! Folks were probably wearin’ them short shorts and listenin’ to that disco music back then. Anyway, this Murphy guy, he took over after that other fella, Craig somethin’-or-other, and seems like he did alright. Better than alright, I guess, since they give him an award and all.
They tellin’ me the Brewers had a record of 93 wins and 69 losses under him. That’s a heap of wins! Don’t know exactly how the baseball works, winnin’ and losin’ and all, but more wins is good, right? Like when you got more eggs in the basket than your neighbor, that’s good. Sounds like this Murphy fella filled their basket pretty full. And they won their division two years in a row! That’s like winnin’ the blue ribbon at the county fair, but twice!
He’s a first-year manager, too! Imagine that, comin’ in fresh and doin’ that well. Reminds me of that time young Billy Johnson took over his pa’s farm and grew the biggest pumpkins we ever did see. Some folks just got a knack for things, I reckon. And this Walker McKinven fella, some coach or somethin’, he says Murphy’s got some kinda “wisdom” he shares with the team. Wisdom, huh? Like knowin’ when to plant the corn or when the rain’s comin’? Maybe it’s baseball wisdom, whatever that is.
- They beat out some other fellas, Carlos somethin’ from the Mets and Mike somethin’ from…somewhere else. Don’t know them fellas, never heard of ‘em. But Murphy beat ‘em, so that’s good, I guess.
- Folks was apparently doubtin’ him at first, all whisperin’ and such. But he showed them, didn’t he? Like that time I baked that prize-winning apple pie, even though everyone said I was too old to be fussin’ around in the kitchen. Showed them alright.
- He’s turnin’ 66 soon. That’s an old fella! Older than my prize rooster, Old George, and that rooster’s seen a thing or two! Guess you ain’t too old to learn new tricks, or in this case, teach some new tricks to them baseball players.
This whole “craft beer” thing, they talk about it startin’ back in the 60s and 70s. Back when I was a young gal, we didn’t have all them fancy beers. Just good ol’ homemade stuff, or maybe somethin’ from the store. But I heard tell there’s a brewery in Germany, old as the hills, been makin’ beer since way back in 1040. Can you believe that? 1040! That’s older than my grandma’s grandma’s grandma, probably. Bet they know a thing or two about brewin’ beer over there. But Pat Murphy, he ain’t brewin’ beer, he’s brewin’ up wins for the Brewers, and that’s what matters, right?
So, good for Pat Murphy, I say. He done good. Made them Brewers winners. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, even if I don’t understand all that baseball mumbo jumbo. It’s like havin’ a good harvest, puttin’ in the work and seein’ it all pay off. That’s somethin’ any old woman can understand.
Pat Murphy is a good manager, he makes the team good, he is a winner. That’s all there is to it. Just like knowing a good tomato from a bad one, you can tell a good manager when you see one.
