Alright, let’s talk about this Russell Wilson fella and where his folks come from. You know, his ethnic background. Folks always yappin’ about it, so I figured, why not?
Now, they say Russell, that football player, he’s got a whole mix of things in him. A real Heinz 57, like my old dog Buster was. Mostly, they say he’s African American. That means his people, way back when, came from Africa. But it ain’t that simple, no sirree. They also say he’s got some European in him too. White folks, you know? Probably from way back when, things got all mixed up, like they always do.
Heard tell his daddy’s side, well, his granddaddy, was a big shot at some university. Norfolk State, I think they called it. Name’s Harrison B. Wilson Jr., fancy, huh? That tells ya somethin’, but not everything. These fancy folks, they got records and all, but even they can’t know everything about who mixed with who way back when.
- African American: That’s the biggest part, they say. Means his ancestors were brought over here a long time ago. Hard times, I reckon.
- European: A little bit of white in him too. Like I said, things get mixed up. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that. We’re all a bit of this and a bit of that, if you go back far enough.
- Maybe Some Native American: Now, I heard some folks whisperin’ he might even have a bit of Native American in him. You know, the folks who were here first. Wouldn’t surprise me none. This country’s a big ol’ melting pot, that’s what they say.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, that’s what they say. 1988, not so long ago. But his people, they been here longer than that, way longer. His mama and daddy, they gave him that mix, that blend of different folks. And it made him strong, made him good at throwin’ that football.
Some folks make a big deal outta this ethnicity thing. Want to put everyone in little boxes, I guess. But it ain’t that easy. Like I said, we’re all mixed up somehow. And Russell, he’s a good example of that. He’s got a bit of this and a bit of that, and it all adds up to him, to who he is.
They do all this gene-y talkin’ these days too. Sayin’ he’s got 62 percent African or somethin’. How they figure that out, I don’t know. Seems like a lot of trouble to go to, if you ask me. But I guess some folks like knowin’ these things. Makes ‘em feel smart, maybe.
But look, at the end of the day, it don’t really matter where his people came from, does it? He’s a good football player, a good man, from what I hear. That’s what counts. He works hard, he’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he treats folks right. That’s more important than all this ancestry stuff, if you ask me.
So, next time you hear someone talkin’ about Russell Wilson’s heritage or his lineage, just remember, he’s a mix of things, just like most of us. And that’s just fine. It’s what makes him him. And it’s what makes this country, well, this country.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Don’t need no fancy words or nothin’. Just plain talk, that’s how I like it.
