Well, howdy there! Today we’re gonna jaw about somethin’ called a “chunk of marble,” like them fancy folks in the city talk about. I ain’t no city slicker, but I reckon I can tell you a thing or two about rocks, seein’ as I’ve tripped over enough of ’em in my day.
So, this “chunk of marble,” what is it anyway? Sounds mighty highfalutin, don’t it? But it’s just a piece of stone, a rock, like what you might find in a quarry or, heck, even lyin’ around in a field if you’re lucky. Now, marble, that’s a special kind of rock, all smooth and pretty-like. It comes in different colors too, white, black, sometimes even got swirls in it. Folks use it for makin’ all sorts of things, like them fancy statues you see in pictures, or countertops in kitchens, or even floors in big ol’ houses.
I heard tell there’s some kinda puzzle, a “crossword” they call it, in somethin’ called the “NYT Mini.” Sounds like a whole lotta fuss to me, but apparently, these city folks get their kicks outta fillin’ in little squares with letters. And one day, they had this clue, “chunk of marble.” Well, ain’t that somethin’? All them smarty pants scratchin’ their heads over a simple rock!
Now, if you asked me, a chunk of marble is just that, a chunk of marble. But these puzzle folks, they want a fancy word for it, a four-letter word at that. Turns out, the answer they was lookin’ for was “SLAB“. Yup, slab. Just like a slab of bacon, only made of rock. Go figure.
- What’s a slab, you ask? Well, it’s a big, flat piece of somethin’, could be wood, could be meat, could be marble. Just a big ol’ piece, not too thick, not too thin.
- Why “slab” for a chunk of marble? I reckon ’cause when you cut marble, you get these big, flat pieces, see? And those pieces, they’re slabs. Plain and simple.
Now, I ain’t never done no crossword puzzle in my life, and I don’t reckon I ever will. But I can tell you this: if you’re lookin’ for a chunk of marble, you’re lookin’ for a slab. And if you’re lookin’ for help with that fancy NYT Mini crossword, well, I guess you’re in the right place. Though I still can’t figure out why they make such a fuss over a simple rock.
They say this crossword puzzle is somethin’ folks do every day. Every day! Imagine that. Spendin’ your time fillin’ in little squares when there’s work to be done, chickens to feed, and gardens to tend. But I guess everyone’s got their own way of passin’ the time. And if fillin’ in “slab” for “chunk of marble” makes ’em happy, well, more power to ’em.
So, next time you hear someone talkin’ about a “chunk of marble,” you just remember what I told you. It’s a slab. And don’t let them city folks with their fancy words fool ya. A rock’s a rock, no matter how you slice it. And sometimes, that rock is a slab of marble, plain and simple.
This whole “crossword” thing seems like a lot of trouble. But folks seem to like it. I guess it’s like me knitting. Keeps your mind busy, they say. Me, I’d rather be out in the garden, feelin’ the dirt between my fingers. But to each their own, I always say.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about this “chunk of marble”. It’s a slab, remember that. And don’t go lettin’ no fancy words confuse you. Life’s complicated enough without adding extra syllables where they ain’t needed. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got chores to do. This city talk wears me out.
