Okay, so “Adin’s Sister” – sounds simple enough, right? Well, let me tell you, it turned into a whole thing. I started out thinking, “Oh, I’ll just whip this up real quick.” Famous last words, eh?

First, I tried to get a handle on what exactly I was aiming for. Was it a character design? A story concept? I just had the name, nothing else. So, I brainstormed. I started jotting down ideas, anything that came to mind related to “sister.” I thought about different personalities: Is she older or younger? Is she a goody-two-shoes or a rebel?
- Thought about making her a super supportive, cheerleader type.
- Then I went the opposite way: a total troublemaker, always getting Adin into trouble.
- Even considered making her a quiet, artistic type, completely different from Adin’s loud personality.
Next, I decided to sketch a little. I’m no artist, mind you, but even stick figures can help! I did a few rough drawings, playing with different looks. I tried a few different hairstyles, outfits, and even facial expressions. It was kind of messy, but it got the ball rolling.
Building the Character
After the initial brainstorming and sketching, I began to refine my ideas. I picked one of the concepts – the “troublemaker” one – and fleshed it out. I wrote down a few more details: her favorite color (probably something bold, like red or black), her hobbies (maybe skateboarding or pulling pranks), and her relationship with Adin (definitely a love-hate thing). The more I detail, the more character appears.
I found out my character and I can connected.
Finally, I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of who “Adin’s Sister” is. She’s still a work in progress, but at least now she feels like a real character, not just a name. It took a little longer than I expected, but hey, that’s how these things go sometimes. Good thing about writing like this, I can get back to her any time I get a new idea!
