Okay, so I finally got around to making that anime golf shirt I’ve been talking about forever. Let me walk you through this whole thing – it was a journey, for sure.

First, I spent, like, a whole afternoon just digging through anime screenshots. I was looking for something that would look cool and not be too crazy out there. Settled on a kinda subtle character pose from this old series I used to watch. Wanted something that people who didn’t even know the anime wouldn’t think was weird.
Next up was figuring out the design. I knew I wanted it on a golf shirt, but I wasn’t sure how to actually get it on there. I looked into a bunch of options – screen printing, heat transfer vinyl, direct-to-garment printing… Decided to try heat transfer vinyl ’cause it seemed like the easiest for a one-off project, plus I already had an iron.
So, I grabbed the screenshot and messed around with it in Photoshop. I cleaned it up, got rid of the background, and flipped it so it would look right on the shirt. Then I had to convert it to a vector image so my cutting machine could actually cut it. That took way longer than I thought! Had to use some online converter tool and tweak it a bunch.
Then came the fun part – cutting the vinyl! I loaded the vector image into my little cutting machine and crossed my fingers. The first cut came out… okay. Some of the finer details were messed up, so I had to adjust the pressure settings and try again. Third time’s the charm, right? Finally got a clean cut. Then I spent, like, an hour weeding all the extra vinyl. My fingers were killing me!
After the weeding nightmare, it was time to iron the design onto the shirt. I used a plain white golf shirt I picked up cheap. I positioned the vinyl where I wanted it, put a piece of parchment paper over it, and started ironing. I made sure to apply even pressure and kept the iron moving. Peeling off the carrier sheet was the most nerve-wracking part! Slowly, slowly… and it worked! Almost. A tiny bit of the vinyl lifted, but I quickly ironed it back down. Phew!
And that’s it! I gotta say, it actually turned out pretty good for a first attempt. The vinyl is holding up surprisingly well after a few washes. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely wearable, and it’s a fun conversation starter. I’m already planning my next anime shirt project. Maybe something a little more ambitious this time. We’ll see!
- Tools I used: Photoshop, online vector converter, cutting machine, iron, weeding tools.
- Materials: White golf shirt, heat transfer vinyl, parchment paper.
- Biggest challenge: Weeding the vinyl! Seriously, it’s a pain.
