Okay, so I’ve been seeing this “best bad weather golfers” thing pop up a lot lately, and I figured, why not put my own game to the test? I’m no pro, but I do enjoy a round even when the skies aren’t exactly friendly. So, here’s how my little experiment went down.

Gearing Up
First things first, I knew I needed the right gear. Forget those sunny-day outfits. This was about staying (relatively) dry and warm.
- Waterproof jacket and pants: These were non-negotiable. I went for ones that were lightweight, so I didn’t feel like I was wearing a suit of armor.
- Waterproof shoes: Soggy socks are a one-way ticket to misery.
- A good hat: Gotta keep the rain out of your eyes, right? I chose a baseball cap which I already had.
- Gloves: It is necessary to keep my hand warm.
The Course and Conditions
I picked a local course I know pretty well. No need to add extra challenges with unfamiliar terrain. The day I chose? Well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. We had a steady drizzle, some decent wind gusts, and the temperature was hovering in the low 50s. Perfect for testing, not so perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Hitting the Links (and the Puddles)
I started my round by teeing off on the first hole. The rain was steady. My drive went surprisingly straight. I guess the rain was the secret ingredient!
Then,I played the second shot. Aiming for the green, I swung my 7-iron. But my foot slipped slightly on the wet grass. The ball went way off course, landing in the rough. This wasn’t part of the plan!
I continued playing through the course. Some holes went well, others not so much. The wind made putting a real guessing game. There was one par-3 where I swear the ball did a little dance in the air before landing nowhere near the hole.
Lessons Learned
After battling through all 18 holes (and looking like a drowned rat), I had a few takeaways:
- Swinging in the rain is different: You gotta adjust your grip and stance, especially on uneven ground.
- Patience is key: You’re gonna hit some bad shots. Just accept it and move on.
- The right gear makes a HUGE difference: I can’t imagine doing this without my waterproof stuff.
- It can actually be fun: Seriously! There’s something kind of cool about playing in less-than-ideal conditions.
So, am I the “best bad weather golfer”? Definitely not. But did I have a surprisingly good time testing my skills and embracing the elements? Absolutely. Would I do it again? You bet. Just maybe with a little less wind next time.
