Okay, so I’ve been hyped about Black Myth: Wukong, like everyone else, and I was really digging the look of that horse head NPC they showed off in one of the trailers. I wanted to try and recreate it, you know, see if I could figure out how they pulled it off. I didn’t have any fancy tools, just some basic stuff I had lying around.

Getting Started
First, I needed a reference. I spent some time just watching that trailer, pausing, and taking screenshots of the horse head guy from different angles. Gotta see all the details, right? The more angles, the better.
The Build
- I found an old plastic horse head – my kid had outgrown it. It wasn’t perfect, but a good starting point.
- I grabbed some clay I had from a previous project. This was key to sculpting the extra details, like those boney ridges and weird face wrinkles.
- I started by adding clay to the plastic head, slowly building up those shapes I saw in the screenshots. This took forever! Lots of smoothing and shaping, then adding more, then smoothing again.
- For the smaller details, like the cracks and the texture, I just used some simple sculpting tools, basically a pointed stick and a knife.
- Once I had it all built, It’s about making it the right shape.
Painting and Finishing
The painting, man, that was tricky. It’s not just one color, you know? It’s like, layers and layers of dark browns, grays, and even some reddish tones in there.
- I started with a dark base coat, just to cover everything up.
- Then I went in with lighter colors, dry-brushing to bring out the highlights on those ridges and edges.
- I even added some washes of darker color in the cracks and crevices, to make them look deeper.
It’s not a perfect replica, not by a long shot. I’m no professional artist. But it was a fun project, and I learned a lot about sculpting and painting along the way. It made me appreciate the work that goes into creating those characters even more. Maybe I’ll try another one sometime, maybe that cool-looking tiger dude!
