Okay, so today I’m gonna yap about something I was digging into a while back – the whole “Michael Phelps college” thing. You know, like, where did the dude go to school? Was he just all swim, no study? I had to know!

First thing I did, of course, was hit up Google. Started with the obvious: “Michael Phelps college.” Boom! University of Michigan pops up everywhere. Sweet, mystery solved… or so I thought.
Next, I needed to know more. Did he actually go there, like, attend classes and stuff? Or was it just some honorary thing because he was a super swimmer? I dove (pun intended!) into the U of M athletics website. Scrolled through a ton of pages about their swim team, looked for any mention of Phelps. Found it! He was on the team, alright.
But here’s where things got a little more interesting. I started seeing conflicting info. Some articles said he majored in sports marketing. Others said he was “undecided.” So, I thought, “Right, gotta dig deeper.” Went to Wikipedia, I know, I know, not always the most reliable source, but it’s a starting point. It mentioned he was in “general studies.” Okay, that’s vague. Sounds like he was just taking classes he found interesting rather than grinding through a specific degree. No hate, just observing!
After that, I figured I’d try to find some interviews with Phelps himself. Found a bunch on YouTube. Watched a few where he talks about his training schedule, his diet, his mental state during the Olympics. Sadly, none of them mentioned anything about college courses. All business! I was really trying to hear from the man himself about his time in college.
Then, I had a breakthrough! Found an old article from like, 2008, where he mentioned taking online classes while still training. He said it was tough balancing everything, but he was committed to getting his degree. I thought to myself: “Online classes? That’s how he did it!”
So, after a few hours of sleuthing, here’s what I pieced together: Phelps went to the University of Michigan. He was a member of the swim team (obviously). He was enrolled in general studies, probably taking classes online to fit around his crazy training schedule. Did he graduate with a degree? That’s still a bit fuzzy, but he did put in the work to try and learn while also dominating the pool. That’s pretty impressive, if you ask me.
Ultimately, my “investigation” didn’t unearth any earth-shattering secrets, but it confirmed a few things and left me with a newfound respect for the dude. Balancing college with being the world’s best swimmer? Insane. I’m glad I looked into it!
