That golfer Hailey Davidson, she sure has been makin’ a big fuss lately. I heard tell she’s the first one of them… whatchamacallits… transgender folks, to win one of them fancy golf tournaments in the whole United States. Happened back in May, they say. Lord have mercy, times are changin’, ain’t they?
This Hailey, she used to be a he. Then she, you know, changed. Now she’s playin’ with the women. Some folks ain’t too happy about it, though. Heard some women, more than 275 of ’em, wrote a letter complainin’. They say it ain’t fair, her playin’ with the ladies. I can understand it maybe, but I do not know anything about this.
She was playin’ in one of them big tournaments, tryin’ to get to the next round, you see. Had to be in the top 96, and she ended up tied for 42nd. Not too shabby, I reckon. She shot a 284, whatever that means. Golf numbers always confused me. Like them old-timey math problems, all those numbers.
Seems like she can hit that little ball real far. One gal, name of Lauren Miller, she played with Hailey. She says Hailey can hit it 10, maybe 20 yards further than her. Sometimes even 50 or 60! That’s like from here to the old Johnson place down the road! That’s a long way, especially in golf, I reckon. I guess, that gal is strong.
They say she went to college, too. Played golf for the men’s team back then. Two different colleges, one in Delaware and one in Virginia, they were called. Wilmington and Christopher Newport. Fancy names for schools, ain’t they?
Few years back, this Hailey tried to play in one of them big LPGA tournaments. Didn’t make it past the first part then. But she’s a tough cookie, that one. Tried again in 2022. Even played at a golf place in Florida, Plantation Golf and Country Club. She can hit the ball a long way!
Now she’s playin’ in some of them professional games, the LPGA and this other one called NXXT. They had some rules that let her play, somethin’ about testosterone, whatever that is. She even won a little tournament back in 2021, they said.

- She plays golf now.
- She hits far.
- She plays with women.
- Some people are mad.
Just this year, she almost made it to the U.S. Women’s Open. Missed it by just one little shot. So close! It’s a big deal, that tournament. My neighbor, Mildred, she watches it every year on that fancy color TV of hers.
This Lauren Miller, she said there’s more to it than just hittin’ the ball far. Somethin’ about “superior upper” somethin’ or other. I don’t know nothin’ about that. Sounds complicated. Golf is a complicated game, I guess. Always has been, always will be.
Heard some folks sayin’ she got banned from the LPGA. She wrote somethin’ about it, I heard. Must be hard, you know, bein’ different and all. I don’t know nothing about that, but I know everyone deserves a chance to play whatever game they like, whether it is cards, or dominos, or golf.
This whole Hailey Davidson golfer thing, it’s got everyone talkin’. It ain’t simple, that’s for sure. But I reckon folks just gotta be kind to each other, no matter what. That’s what my mama always said, anyway. And she was right about most things.
I don’t understand all this. I only know how to play poker. But I think it is not good to be mean to other people. Everyone wants to do something fun. Even if I don’t understand golf. Golf is a strange game.
Well, I’ve said my piece. Time for me to go tend to my garden. Got some tomatoes needin’ waterin’. They don’t care about all this fuss, they just want some sunshine and a little drink of water. That’s all that matters.
