Alright, let me tell you about my little adventure trying to track down a Pokémon with its hidden ability in Pixelmon. It’s something I’d been meaning to do for a while, mostly because I heard some hidden abilities are pretty useful, you know?

Getting Started – The Goal
So, I decided I really wanted a specific Pokémon, let’s say it was a Torchic, with its Speed Boost hidden ability. Seemed like a game-changer compared to its regular Blaze ability. Sounded simple enough, right? Just gotta find one.
First Attempts – Running Blind
My first plan? Well, it wasn’t much of a plan. I just went out to the biome where Torchics spawn and started battling and catching every single one I could find. Seriously, I must have caught like, thirty of them.
- Caught a Level 5 Torchic. Checked ability: Blaze. Nope.
- Caught another, Level 7. Checked ability: Blaze. Still nope.
- Ran around for maybe an hour, catching more. All Blaze.
Yeah, that got old pretty fast. Clearly, just randomly catching them wasn’t the efficient way to do this. Felt like I was wasting Poké Balls.
Figuring Things Out – How It Actually Works
I took a break and did a bit of digging. Asked some other players, looked things up. Turns out, hidden abilities aren’t usually found on just any wild Pokémon you bump into. There are specific ways you gotta go about it.
Someone mentioned the DexNav feature. Apparently, if you use the DexNav to search for a specific Pokémon, sometimes, especially if you build up a search chain, you might find one with its hidden ability. Sounded promising, way better than just running around hoping for luck.
The Hunt – Using the DexNav
Okay, so I grabbed my DexNav. Found a good spot with Torchics. Started the search. You get that little notification, see the grass rustle somewhere nearby. Then comes the tricky part – sneaking. You gotta creep up on it without scaring it off. Messed that up a few times at first, broke my chain.
It took some practice getting the hang of the sneaking speed. Then it was just repeating the process:
- Scan with DexNav.
- See the rustling grass/whatever indicator it uses.
- Sneak up carefully.
- Battle and catch the Torchic.
- Check its summary… still Blaze.
- Repeat. Scan, sneak, catch, check.
This felt way more focused, though. Each successful sneak and catch built up the chain level on the DexNav. People said the higher the chain, the better the chance for hidden abilities, better IVs, shinies, all that good stuff. I was just focused on the HA for now.

Success At Last!
I was getting into a rhythm. Scan, sneak, catch, check. Chain level kept climbing. Got past 20, then 30… I was starting to wonder if it was ever gonna happen. Then, maybe around chain level 40-something? I caught another Torchic.
Went to check its summary, almost automatically expecting Blaze again. But wait… the ability listed wasn’t Blaze. It was Speed Boost! Finally! I actually double-checked it just to be sure my eyes weren’t playing tricks on me.
Felt pretty great, honestly. All that sneaking and catching finally paid off. Wasn’t super complicated once I knew how to do it, but it definitely took some patience and sticking with the DexNav method.
What Now?
So yeah, mission accomplished. Got my Torchic with Speed Boost. Now I can finally start training it up. Definitely worth the effort compared to just settling for the standard ability. It’s cool knowing how these mechanics work now for future hunts.
