Okay, so I spent some time today digging into the whole Deebo Samuel contract situation. It’s been on my mind, especially after hearing about the recent moves.

First thing I did was try to recall the timeline. I remember back after he had that massive All-Pro season, there was a lot of noise. He wasn’t happy, right? That’s when he first wanted out of San Francisco. There was a whole contract dispute brewing.
So I looked that up. Yeah, the 49ers definitely listened to trade offers around the 2022 draft time. But apparently, they didn’t get any offers they liked. Couldn’t get the value they wanted for him, I guess.
What happened next? Instead of trading him, they locked him down. I found the details of the extension they gave him. It was pretty significant.
The Extension Deal
- Signed back in 2022.
- It was a three-year extension.
- The total value was reported around $71.5 million. A big commitment at the time.
Then, of course, things shifted again this offseason. That’s the main thing I wanted to get straight. The trade finally happened.
I checked the specifics of the trade just announced. The San Francisco 49ers sent him packing.
The Trade
- Deebo Samuel Sr. traded to the Washington Commanders.
- In exchange, the 49ers got back a 2025 fifth-round draft pick. Seems like less than they might have gotten back in 2022, but that’s how it goes.
So now he’s with the Commanders. I then looked into what’s remaining on that contract he signed.
Turns out, he’s heading into the final season of that three-year extension. Just one year left on the deal he signed with the Niners.
He’s got a base salary for 2025, seems like a solid number, maybe around $17.5 million was mentioned somewhere I saw. It’s just interesting tracking how these player contracts and team situations evolve over just a couple of seasons. Quite the journey for him.
