Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with my golf gear lately, trying to fine-tune things, you know? I’m a big fan of sticking with what works, but sometimes you gotta try new stuff. Today, I wanna talk about what I’ve been doing based on Patrick Cantlay’s setup – specifically, his “WITB” or “What’s In The Bag.”
First off, I grabbed my driver. Now, Cantlay uses a Titleist TS3, set to around 8.75 degrees. I’ve been playing around with my old driver, tweaking the loft a bit. I noticed Cantlay’s got a Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60 TX shaft in his. I don’t have that exact one, but I do have a similar stiff shaft that I slapped on to see how it felt. The results were pretty good, I felt that the ball flies pretty straight.
Next up, the 3-wood. Cantlay rocks a Titleist 915F, 15 degrees, with a Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 70 TX shaft. I dug out my old 3-wood and tried to mimic the loft. Didn’t have the same shaft, so I just used what I had on hand. Honestly, it felt decent. I’ve been hitting it further and straighter than before.
Now, here’s where I made a bigger change. I saw that Cantlay recently switched out his old Titleist 718 AP2 irons for these new PING Blueprint S irons. They just came out this year, and I was itching to try them. So, I went ahead and got myself a set. After hitting the range a few times, man, these things feel sweet. They have a softer feel at impact.
Putter Grip
- Experimenting with Putter Grips
I also noticed Cantlay uses a Flatso SuperStroke putter grip. It’s that pentagonal-shaped one. I’ve always been curious about those, so I picked one up and put it on my putter. It definitely feels different, a bit weird at first, but I can see how it helps keep the hands steady. I still need some time to adjust.
I also tried using Cantlay’s 7-wood, which is a Titleist TS2, 21 degrees. I found an old 7-wood in my garage and gave it a whirl. Not bad, but not sure if it’s gonna replace anything in my bag just yet. I need more time to play with this one on the course.
The whole point of this was to see if I could learn something from how a top player like Cantlay sets up his bag. I figured, hey, he’s ranked No. 8 in the world, he must be doing something right. Plus, he’s had some big wins, like the 2022 BMW Championship, so I was curious to see if any of his gear choices could help my game.
So far, I’m pretty happy with the changes I’ve made. The new irons are definitely a win. The putter grip is interesting, and I’m gonna keep practicing with it. Overall, it’s been a fun experiment, and I think I’ve actually improved my setup a bit. Still a long way to go, but it’s all about the journey, right?
