Right, people talk about Canelo, his fights, all that stuff. Makes you think sometimes, doesn’t it? Seeing guys like that, super fit, disciplined. It actually got me thinking a while back, maybe I should try boxing. Not seriously, you know, just to get in shape, hit a bag.

So, I actually did it. I went out and bought some stuff. Nothing fancy, just some basic gloves, hand wraps. Found a local gym that had a boxing setup. Looked alright from the outside. Paid the sign-up fee, felt pretty motivated that first day.
My Big Boxing Adventure
Walked in there, ready to go. The place had that typical gym smell, sweat and rubber mats. Fine. But the vibe was kinda off. Lots of guys who clearly knew each other, doing their thing. Felt a bit like an outsider, which I guess I was. Anyway, found the boxing area.
There was a coach, sort of overseeing things. I went over, said I was new, wanted to learn the basics. He was busy talking to someone else, just kinda nodded towards a heavy bag. No real instruction, no “do this, not that”. Just “go hit the bag”. Okay… so I started trying to remember stuff I saw online. Felt pretty stupid, honestly.
I tried for a couple of weeks. It went something like this:
- Show up.
- Try to get the coach’s attention for like, two minutes of advice. Usually failed.
- Hit the bag feeling like I had no idea what I was doing.
- Watch other people who seemed to know more.
- Leave feeling more confused than when I arrived.
The coach seemed more interested in the guys who were already good or maybe training for actual fights. Beginners? Felt like we were just there to pay the membership fee. No real coaching, no structure for someone just starting out. Plus, it wasn’t exactly cheap, you know? Paying for basically hitting a bag by myself.
After maybe the fourth or fifth time feeling totally lost and ignored, I just stopped going. The gloves are probably still in a box somewhere in the garage. It was just a waste of time and money. You see these top athletes like Canelo with their amazing teams and training camps, and then you see the reality for regular folks trying to get into it at a local level. Completely different worlds.
So yeah, Canelo’s impressive. But my own little attempt at boxing? Total flop. Just made me realize sometimes it’s better to just watch the pros do their thing.
