Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into houseplants, and I decided to start with something supposedly easy: a Jordan plant. I’d heard they were pretty low-maintenance, so I figured, “What could go wrong?” Famous last words, right?
Getting Started
First, I went to a local nursery. I didn’t want to order online because I wanted to pick out my plant in person. I looked at a bunch of different ones, trying to find one that looked healthy. No brown leaves, no weird spots. I finally settled on a smallish one in a cute little pot.
The First Few Weeks
I brought it home and placed it in my living room, near a window, but not in direct sunlight. I’d read that they like bright, indirect light. I watered it when the top inch of soil felt dry, which seemed to be about once a week. I even mist the leaves a couple of times a week because I thought it would like the humidity.
Uh Oh…Trouble in Paradise
After a few weeks, I noticed some of the lower leaves were starting to yellow. “Oh no,” I thought. “Am I killing it already?” I started googling like crazy. Was I overwatering? Underwatering? Was it getting enough light? Not enough light? I felt totally lost.
Experimentation and Adjustment
- I tried watering it less frequently. I let the soil dry out a bit more between waterings.
- I moved it to a slightly brighter spot, just in case.
- I even bought a little moisture meter to help me figure out when to water.
Fingers Crossed
It’s been a few more weeks, and I think I’ve finally figured it out. The yellowing seems to have stopped, and it’s even put out a couple of new leaves! I’m still a little nervous, but I’m feeling more confident. I’m learning that even “easy” plants need some attention and adjustment. It’s all about finding the right balance.
I am still doing practices, and will keep updating my results.
