So, I was watching some UFC stuff the other day, you know, catching up on fights. Khamzat Chimaev popped up again, this guy’s just a bulldozer in the cage. Got me curious, not just about his fighting, but like, his whole background. Where’s he really from? What’s his story? And yeah, the religion question came up in my head.

Okay, Let’s Find Out
First thing I did, just grabbed my phone while the highlights were still rolling. Typed in the usual stuff, “Khamzat Chimaev background”, “Khamzat Chechnya”, things like that. Got the basics, born in Chechnya, moved to Sweden. Okay, that makes sense.
Then I specifically searched for “Khamzat Chimaev religion“. You get a lot of fan forums and articles right away. Some just state it plain, others kinda dance around it. It’s the internet, right? Never know what’s totally solid.
I decided to dig a bit deeper than just random blog posts. Tried looking for interviews. Found a few clips, some with subtitles, some where he’s speaking English. Listened closely to see if he mentioned anything himself. Didn’t catch anything super direct in the first few I watched, mostly fight talk.
Looking for Clues
I thought, maybe check his social media? Fighters sometimes post personal stuff there. Scrolled through his Instagram for a bit. Saw lots of training pics, fight promotion stuff, some family pictures. Didn’t see any outright religious posts immediately, but you can sometimes get a vibe, you know?
Then I remembered seeing fighters pray sometimes. Went back to YouTube and searched for things like “Chimaev praying before fight” or similar stuff. Found some clips from weigh-ins or pre-fight moments. Saw him pointing upwards, looking pretty devout in a few instances. That’s a pretty common gesture.
I also stumbled upon a few articles and fan discussions that mentioned it more definitively. They were pointing to specific things he’d said or gestures he made. Multiple sources started pointing the same way.
- Saw him thanking God in post-fight interviews.
- Read some forum posts where people who follow him closely confirmed it.
- Saw mentions of him observing Ramadan.
Putting it Together
So after poking around for a while, watching clips, reading bits and pieces here and there, it became pretty clear. All signs pointed towards Khamzat Chimaev being Muslim. It fits with his Chechen background too, which is predominantly Muslim.
It wasn’t like some big secret, just took a little bit of digging past the surface-level fight news. Interesting guy, seems very focused and dedicated, both in his fighting and, appears, in his faith. Just wanted to satisfy my own curiosity, and yeah, that seems to be the story there.
