Well now, if you’re talkin’ ’bout Oklahoma Heisman winners, y’all come to the right place. See, Oklahoma, they’re no stranger to having folks walk away with that shiny Heisman Trophy. I reckon it’s a big deal, a real big deal, in the world of football, and them Sooners sure know how to show ’em what they got.
Now, y’all may not know, but Oklahoma’s got a good handful of Heisman winners. They ain’t at the top like USC, but they’re right up there with seven winners. That’s mighty impressive if you ask me. Let me tell you a bit ’bout them winners, ’cause they sure earned their spots in history.
- Billy Vessels – Back in 1952, Billy was the first Oklahoma player to get the Heisman. He was a halfback and sure knew how to run the ball. That boy was quick, and folks still talk ’bout him today.
- Steve Owens – In 1969, Steve Owens brought home the Heisman for Oklahoma. He was another strong runner, real tough. He helped lead them Sooners to victory and sure made a name for himself.
- Billy Sims – Now, Billy Sims, he won the Heisman in 1978, and let me tell ya, that man could move! He was part of the 1975 national title team too, so he’s not just a one-time wonder. He was also named UPI Player of the Year, and I reckon that’s no small feat.
- Jason White – Fast forward to 2003, and Jason White earned himself the Heisman Trophy. He had a real good arm, and folks remember him for being a quarterback that could lead the team to greatness.
- Sam Bradford – In 2008, Sam Bradford took home the Heisman. He was a quarterback too, and what a season he had! His accuracy and leadership made him stand out that year, and the Sooners were proud to have him wearin’ their colors.
- Baker Mayfield – Last but certainly not least, in 2017, Baker Mayfield won the Heisman. He was a fiery one, always out there proving himself, and his strong arm and fiery spirit helped the Sooners in many games.
Now, as you can see, it ain’t just a fluke that Oklahoma keeps bringin’ home these trophies. They got a history of solid players, folks who know how to handle the ball and take it all the way. Them Sooners sure make their mark on the field, and they’re known for having a team that’s got heart and skill.
And you know, Oklahoma’s got something special. They know how to breed some mighty fine football players. I reckon that’s why they keep getting folks on that Heisman list. All them players, from Billy Vessels in the 50s to Baker Mayfield in the 2010s, they’ve all put their stamp on the game. If you ask me, that’s somethin’ to be real proud of.
So, next time you’re watchin’ a game and someone mentions the Sooners or the Heisman, just remember, these folks know how to play football, and they know how to win the big one. Might not be the biggest in numbers like USC, but Oklahoma’s sure got their fair share of Heisman winners. Ain’t no denying that.
