Getting Back into McGregor vs Holloway
So, the other day I found myself thinking about that old McGregor vs Holloway fight from way back. Can’t remember why, maybe just scrolling through stuff online. Decided, you know what, let’s actually sit down and watch it properly again, see what I notice this time around.

Setting Up and Watching
Didn’t do anything fancy. Just pulled up the fight on my tablet. Grabbed a notepad, thought I might jot down a few things, but mostly just wanted to watch closely. Poured myself a drink, got comfortable on the couch. It’s funny how you remember fights differently over time.
Watching it again, man, McGregor’s movement was really something back then. That wide stance, the pressure he put on. Holloway was tough, even with what happened during the fight, kept coming forward. It wasn’t the crazy knockout fest some might remember, more of a technical game, especially on the ground later on, which surprised me a bit, I’d forgotten that part.
Key things I noticed this time:
- McGregor’s control of distance early on. He was really good at keeping Max at the end of his punches.
- Holloway’s chin, even back then. Took some clean shots.
- The shift in the fight after McGregor seemed to have his own issues.
- How young they both looked! Crazy how time flies.
Trying Out Some Moves (Sort Of)
After watching, I felt a bit inspired. Nothing crazy, mind you. Just stood up in the living room and tried mimicking that wide, low stance McGregor used. It feels awkward at first, definitely puts strain on the legs differently than my usual stance. Threw a few slow-motion spinning back kicks like Conor did – nearly clipped the coffee table, gotta be more careful next time! Wasn’t really ‘training’, more like messing around, trying to feel the movement myself. It helps understand what you’re seeing on screen a bit better, I think.
Final Thoughts on the Session
It was a good way to spend an hour or so. Just revisiting that fight, seeing the skills on display. It wasn’t some deep technical breakdown session, just me watching and thinking. Made me appreciate both guys’ skills again. Holloway’s evolution since then is incredible, and McGregor’s early run was undeniably electric. Fun little practice session, even if it was mostly watching and a bit of shadow boxing in the lounge. Reminds you there’s always something to see in these old fights.
