Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this fella, Michael Lorenzen. Sounds like a fancy name, don’t it? He’s one of them baseball pitchers, you know, throws the ball real hard. This story, it’s kinda like them stories they tell on the TV, all about where he started, way back when he was just a young’un in high school.
So, this Michael, he went to a place called Fullerton Union High School, out in California. California, that’s where all them movie stars are, and I guess some baseball players too. Anyways, he was a good hitter, even when he was just a little squirt in ninth grade. Hit over .400 they say, which sounds pretty darn good to me. I mean, hittin’ a baseball ain’t easy, you know? You gotta have a good eye and swing that bat just right.
Now, some folks, they saw somethin’ special in this Michael. The Tampa Bay Rays, a big baseball team, they wanted him. They picked him in somethin’ called a draft way back in 2010. But Michael, he was a smart one. He figured he needed more learnin’, so he went off to college instead, California State University it was. Good for him, I always say, get that education!
Years later, this Michael, he’s pitchin’ in the big leagues, for the Philadelphia Phillies. And wouldn’t you know it, he throws a no-hitter! That’s somethin’ special, real special. Means nobody on the other team got a hit off him the whole game. It’s like, you’re standin’ there with your bat, and that ball just whizzes by, and you can’t even touch it. Folks go wild when that happens, cheerin’ and hollerin’ and such.
And guess what? His high school, that Fullerton Union place, they’re real proud. Turns out, they got a whole bunch of fellas who went on to pitch in the big leagues. Four of ’em, they say, and all four of ’em have thrown no-hitters. That’s somethin’ else, ain’t it? This Walter Johnson fella, Steve Busby, Mike Warren, and now Michael Lorenzen. That high school must be doin’ somethin’ right, teachin’ them boys how to throw that ball.
They even traded him to the Phillies, from some team called the Tigers. Seems like he was doin’ okay there too, pitchin’ and all. But then he went to the Phillies, and bam! No-hitter! Just like that. Makes you wonder, don’t it? Maybe it was the change of scenery, maybe it was just his time. Baseball’s a funny game like that, you never really know what’s gonna happen.
- He was a good hitter in high school.
- He went to college instead of signing with the Rays.
- He pitched a no-hitter for the Phillies.
- His high school has produced other no-hitter pitchers.
Now, I don’t know much about baseball, to be honest. I’m just a simple old woman. But I can tell you this, that Michael Lorenzen, he must be somethin’ special. To go from high school, to college, to the big leagues, and then throw a no-hitter? That’s a real accomplishment. And that high school, Fullerton Union, they got somethin’ to brag about, that’s for sure. All them pitchers, comin’ from the same place. It’s like there’s somethin’ in the water out there, makin’ them boys throw that ball so hard and so good. Anyways, that’s the story as I heard it. A good story, about a good fella who did somethin’ great. And that’s all there is to it.
