Alright, so you wanna know about this Mickey Mantle fella, in 1958, right? Okay, okay, I’ll tell ya what I know. Don’t expect no fancy words though, I ain’t no scholar, just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two.
Now, this Mickey, he was a baseball player, a real famous one. Big hitter, they say. 1958, that was a long time ago, even before my old man started losing his hair, haha. They say he played a whole bunch of games that year, 150 they say. That’s a lot of games, even for a young fella. He must’ve been runnin’ around like a chicken with its head cut off.
- 150 games, that’s what I heard. Imagine that! Running and hitting and catching.
- Makes my old bones ache just thinking about it.
They say 1956 was his best year though, even better than ‘58. Hit all them balls, scored all them runs. But then, you know how it is, especially with these young fellas. Too much fun, too much… well, never you mind. They say he got into some trouble, didn’t take care of himself. Too much boozin’ and such, like my neighbor’s no-good son. Injuries too, poor fella.
But back to 1958. He was still playin’, still hittin’ I reckon. Just maybe not as good as before. You know, like an old mule that’s still workin’ but ain’t got the same pep in its step.
They got these cards with his picture on ‘em, you know? Like them picture cards the kids used to collect. They say some of them are worth a whole lot of money. Can you believe it? Just a little piece of cardboard with a picture. One of ‘em, a rookie card they call it, from way back in ‘51, that one’s real valuable. I saw one the other day when I was cleaning out the attic. Maybe worth a hundred and twenty five dollars if it’s in good shape, they said. That’s more than I got in my purse right now!
Anyways, this Mickey Mantle, he was a big deal. People loved him, still do I guess. A real celebrity, like them movie stars. Collectors, they go crazy for his stuff. Cards, bats, gloves, whatever he touched, they want it. Seems a bit silly to me, but hey, folks will spend their money on whatever they please.
So, 1958, yeah, he played. He wasn’t at his best maybe, but he was still out there. A lot of games, that’s for sure. And people still remember him, still talk about him, even old biddies like me. That’s gotta mean somethin’, right? He must’ve been somethin’ special.
Now, I gotta go make myself a cup of tea. All this talkin’ about baseball and celebrities has made my throat dry. You youngsters and your fancy interests! But I guess it’s good to remember the old times, even if they’re before your time. This Mickey fellow, he was part of those old times, and that’s worth somethin’.
So, to sum it up about Mickey Mantle in 1958: he played a lot of games, wasn’t his best year but still good, people love his cards and he was a real celebrity. There, I told you everything I know, now go on and do somethin’ useful!
