Okay, so, last weekend, I tried out this thing called “scramble golf” with a few buddies. We’d heard about it but never actually given it a shot. Honestly, it sounded a bit complicated at first, but we figured, why not?
We got to the course, and the first thing we did was form a team. There were four of us, which I guess is pretty standard for this kind of game. Then we had to pick a captain. That was a whole discussion in itself. Eventually, we settled on Dave, mostly because he’s the most level-headed of the bunch.
So here’s how it works. Everyone tees off. Yep, all four of us whack that ball as hard as we can. Then, the captain, in this case, Dave, gets to choose which ball is in the best spot. We all gather around and have a look, giving our two cents and whatnot, but it’s the captain’s call at the end of the day.
Once we picked the “chosen one”, the rest of us picked up our balls and moved them over to where the best shot landed. From there, we all took our second shots. It’s kinda cool because you get a second chance if your first shot was a total disaster. We kept doing this, hole after hole. It is like a team effort to get the lowest score possible. It is so fun!
- Tee off: Everyone hits their ball from the teeing area.
- Choose the best shot: The captain picks the ball they think is in the best position.
- Move the other balls: The rest of the team moves their balls to the spot of the chosen shot.
- Take the next shot: Everyone hits their ball again from this new location.
- Repeat: This process continues until the ball is in the hole.
One funny thing that happened was on the third hole. My first shot was atrocious. It was way over there. I mean, a real shank. But luckily, one of our team hit a beauty, so it didn’t even matter. That’s the beauty of this game, I guess. You can have a terrible shot, and it doesn’t necessarily ruin it for everyone. Then we moved the ball to the spot. We finally finished the hole.
By the end of the day, we were all pretty beat, but we had a blast. The scramble format really takes some of the pressure off, especially if you’re not the best golfer. It’s more about having fun and working together than individual performance. We definitely plan to play it again soon. Maybe next time, I’ll even get to be captain. Who knows?
