Alright, alright, let me tell you ’bout this Stanley Morgan fella, the younger one, and his daddy. It’s a bit of a tangled mess, this family story, like a ball of yarn the cat got a hold of. You know how it is, families, always somethin’ goin’ on.
So, this young Stanley Morgan, they call him Stanley Morgan Jr., he’s from New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans, that’s a place, I tell ya. Full of life, full of trouble, probably full of good food too, though I ain’t never been. Anyway, he was born in this place called Gentilly. Now, from what I hear, Gentilly ain’t exactly the fanciest part of town. More like the kinda place where you gotta keep your eyes open and your wits about ya.
This boy, Stanley Jr., he had a mama, name of Jason. Yep, Jason. Sounds like a man’s name, don’t it? But that’s what they called her. And she raised him all by herself, a single mama, you know? Tough job, that. Real tough. Now, why was she a single mama? Well, that’s where the daddy part comes in.
See, Stanley Jr.’s daddy, he was also named Stanley Morgan. So, to keep ’em straight, they call the daddy Stanley Morgan Sr. and the boy Stanley Morgan Jr. Makes sense, right? But here’s the thing, seems like Stanley Sr. wasn’t around much. Not sure why, exactly. Maybe he went off, maybe somethin’ happened. They don’t say much about him, just that Jason raised the boy alone. It happens, you know? Men sometimes…well, they ain’t always reliable.
- Stanley Morgan Jr. – Born in Gentilly, New Orleans. Raised by a single mother.
- Jason – Stanley Jr.’s mother. Raised him on her own.
- Stanley Morgan Sr. – Stanley Jr.’s father. Not much is known about him.
Now, this whole Stanley Morgan name, it goes back a ways. There’s even a Stanley Morgan Sr. who had a daddy himself. Imagine that! Generations of Stanleys. It’s like them Russian dolls, one inside the other, except with names instead of dolls. But this older Stanley Sr., he ain’t the daddy of the Stanley Jr. we’re talkin’ about. Just the same name, that’s all. Confusin’, ain’t it?
Then there’s talk of other Morgans, too. Big shot bankers, they say. Folks with lots of money, way back when. This one fella, Pierpont Morgan, they called him America’s greatest banker. Now, that’s somethin’, ain’t it? But I don’t know if these rich Morgans are related to our Stanley Morgans or not. Maybe they are, maybe they ain’t. Rich folks and poor folks, sometimes they share a name, but that don’t mean they share much else.
They say these rich Morgans lost some of their money in somethin’ called the Great Depression. Sounds like a sad time. And they gave a lot of it away too, to help folks, I guess. Charity, they call it. Good for them, I reckon. But that money got spread thin, all the way down to about 200 kinfolk. That’s a lot of mouths to feed, even if you got a big pile of money to start with. And they was Episcopalians, whatever that is. Church folks, I guess.
There was also this Junius Spencer Morgan, a big-time banker over in London. He helped his son, that Pierpont fella, get started in the bankin’ business in New York, on somethin’ called Wall Street. Sounds fancy. Pierpont, he died over in Rome, Italy, a long time ago. Left his money and business to his son. That’s how it goes, I suppose. The rich get richer, and then they pass it on down. But that ain’t got much to do with our Stanley Morgan Jr. in New Orleans, ceptin’ maybe they share a name somewhere way back when.
So, to sum it up, we got Stanley Morgan Jr. from New Orleans, raised by his mama Jason. His daddy was Stanley Morgan Sr., but nobody seems to know much about him. And then there’s a whole bunch of other Morgans, some rich, some not, some from way back when. It’s a family puzzle, that’s for sure. And like most families, it’s got its secrets and its stories, some told and some not.
