Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Olympia Fields South Course, ya know, the golf place. It ain’t no small potatoes, that’s for sure. I heard tell it’s got two big ol’ golf courses, North and South they call ’em.
The South Course, that’s what we’re talkin’ about, it’s right there in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Folks say it’s one of the best in the whole state. Not too shabby, eh? They got this place, Olympia Fields Country Club, been around since, what, 1915? Can ya believe it? And back then, they had not one, not two, but four golf courses! Imagine that, four of ’em! Musta been a sight to see.
Now, the North Course, they say it’s real fancy, one of the best in the whole country, even. But the South Course, it ain’t no slouch neither. People who know golf, they say it’s right up there, top ten in Illinois. That’s somethin’, ain’t it?
- They got eighteen holes on that South Course, so you can walk and walk and walk, hit that little ball all day long.
- And they got this thing called a scorecard, to keep track of how good, or bad, you’re doin’.
- And if you wanna know how far you gotta hit the ball, they got yardages and pars and all that stuff. I don’t understand it all, but them golfers, they eat it up.
I heard tell it costs a pretty penny to join this club, though. Twenty thousand dollars, just to get in the door! And that money, it’s gone, you don’t get it back. If you wanna pay in two goes, it’s even more, twenty-five thousand! Land sakes, that’s more money than I’ve seen in my whole life! But I guess if you got the money and you love golf that much, it’s worth it.
They got somethin’ they call a “Course Database,” sounds fancy, huh? It tells ya all about the course, how it’s laid out, where everything is. You can even see a map of the whole thing, like a bird’s-eye view. And they got this GPS thing, tells ya how far you gotta hit the ball, I reckon. Technology these days, it’ll make your head spin.
They got this place called the “73rd Hole”, used to be a grill, I think. Maybe you can get a bite to eat after all that walkin’ and hittin’. Golf makes a person hungry, you know. All that fresh air and exercise.
So, yeah, that Olympia Fields South Course, it’s a real somethin’. A big, fancy golf course where rich folks go to hit little balls and walk around. It ain’t my cup of tea, but hey, to each their own, I always say. If they like it, that’s their business. Me, I’d rather sit on my porch with a glass of iced tea, but that’s just me.
This Willie Park Junior fella, he designed the North Course way back when. Grandpappy of golf design, they call him. He even won the Open Championship two times! That North Course, it’s supposed to be somethin’ special, but the South Course, like I said, it ain’t bad neither. It’s a good place for them golfers to spend their time and money. Keep ’em busy, that’s for sure.
They got this “Course Tours” thing too. I guess that means you can go and look at the course, even if you ain’t playin’. See how pretty it is, all that green grass and them little flags. It’s probably real nice on a sunny day. But you know, I’d rather look at my garden, it’s just as pretty and I don’t have to pay twenty thousand dollars to see it.
Anyway, that’s the gist of it. The Olympia Fields South Course. A big, fancy golf place in Illinois. If you like golf and you got the money, go on and check it out. Me, I’ll stick to my porch and my iced tea. It’s a whole lot cheaper and just as enjoyable, if you ask me.
