Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this whole “Kissing Suzy Kolber” thing for a while now, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I remember stumbling upon it back in, I don’t know, 2006 or so, maybe it was 2007? Man, those years all blend together. It’s been a long time, and I still remember it. Anyway, it was this sports blog, but not your usual kind of sports blog. It was funny, it was irreverent, and it didn’t take itself too seriously. Kinda like me, you know?
So, I started digging into it. Turns out, it was named after this crazy incident during a football game back in 2003. Some dude named Joe Namath got drunk and tried to kiss Suzy Kolber on live TV. That alone is pretty weird, but the fact that these guys named their blog after it? That’s what got me hooked.
I spent hours reading through old posts. The writing was hilarious. It was mostly about football, but they’d throw in all sorts of other stuff too. They had these recurring characters, like this fictionalized version of NFL players, coaches. It was all so absurd, but in a good way. I kept a notebook with all the posts and notes of what I did.
Then I found out who was behind it all. These guys, Drew Magary, Matt Ufford, Michael Tunison, they were like the ringleaders. They called themselves “Big Daddy Drew,” or something like that. I started following them on social media, reading everything they wrote. They were like the cool kids of the internet, and I wanted to be part of the club. I even tried to do what they did.
- Read all the posts
- Follow the writers
- Try to write like them
I even started my own little blog, trying to imitate their style. I called it “Trying to Kiss Suzy Kolber,” or “TTKSK,” get it? It wasn’t very good, to be honest. I didn’t have their wit or their inside jokes. But I kept at it, because I was having fun. It was like a hobby, you know? Something to do in my spare time. And I wrote down everything I did in that notebook.
The End of an Era
Then, in 2015, I saw the news. Kissing Suzy Kolber was shutting down. Tunison, who was the editor-in-chief by then, wrote this farewell post. It was kinda sad, actually. He talked about how the internet had changed and how it wasn’t fun anymore. I felt a pang of sadness, like a part of my internet life was ending.
But then, a few months later, I heard about this new site called “Door Flies Open.” It was started by some of the same guys from KSK. I immediately checked it out, and it had a similar vibe. It wasn’t exactly the same, but it was close enough. And I wrote that in my notebook with everything else.
So yeah, that’s my story about Kissing Suzy Kolber. It was a weird, funny, and ultimately kind of sad chapter in my internet life. But I’m glad I experienced it. It taught me that it’s okay to be silly, to not take things too seriously, and to find humor in the most unexpected places. And I still have that notebook, a reminder of those wild days.
