Alright, let me tell you about this peacock door handle project I tackled. It was a bit of a journey, not gonna lie, but the end result? Totally worth it.

It all started with seeing some fancy door hardware online. I got fixated on peacock designs – that iridescent blue and green, the intricate feather details… I just had to have some on my own doors. But the prices? Ouch. So, naturally, I decided to DIY it.
First, I hit up the local hardware store. Grabbed a couple of plain, solid brass door handles. Nothing fancy, just good, sturdy bases to work with. Then, it was off to the craft store. This is where things got interesting.
I spent a solid hour digging through beads, wires, and paints. My vision was a peacock feather wrapping around the handle, kinda like it was embracing the door. So, I needed stuff that could create that effect. I ended up with:
- A bunch of iridescent blue and green glass beads
- Thin, flexible copper wire
- Some strong epoxy glue – the kind that’s supposed to hold anything to anything
- Acrylic paints in peacock-y colors (blues, greens, gold)
- A clear sealant to protect the finished product
Back home, the real work began. I started by prepping the brass handles. Gave them a good scrub with some steel wool to create a slightly rough surface for the paint to grip onto. Then, I laid down a base coat of dark blue acrylic paint. Let that dry completely – patience is key here, folks.
Next came the fun part: creating the feather effect. I used the copper wire to create a sort of “skeleton” of the feather, wrapping it around the handle and shaping it into a curve. This was fiddly, let me tell you. The wire kept slipping, the shape wasn’t quite right… but I kept at it.
Once I had the wire frame in place, I started gluing on the glass beads. This was painstakingly slow work. Each bead had to be individually placed and glued. I used a toothpick to apply tiny dabs of epoxy, then carefully positioned the beads. I worked in sections, letting the glue dry completely before moving on. This prevented the beads from sliding around and messing up the design.
After the beads were all glued on, I added some details with the acrylic paints. I used a fine-tipped brush to paint tiny “eyes” on the feathers, adding depth and dimension. I also added some gold accents to make it pop. Then, another layer of drying time.
Finally, I applied a coat of clear sealant to protect the paint and beads from wear and tear. This also gave the handles a nice, glossy finish.

Attaching them to the door was pretty straightforward. Just swapped out the old handles with my new, peacock-inspired creations.
The Result?
Honestly, I was blown away. They looked even better than I had imagined! The iridescent beads shimmered in the light, the colors were vibrant, and the feather details were just stunning. They instantly elevated the look of my doors and added a touch of personality to my home.
Was it easy? Nope. Did it take a long time? You bet. Would I do it again? Absolutely! It was a challenging but rewarding project, and now I have a set of unique door handles that I made myself. Plus, I saved a ton of money compared to buying something similar from a store.
So, if you’re feeling crafty and want to add a touch of peacock flair to your home, give it a try! Just be prepared to put in the time and effort – it’s worth it in the end.
