Okay, so I saw this “two-time U.S. Open winner” crossword clue pop up again today, and I figured, you know what? I’m gonna figure this out, once and for all. I’ve seen it enough times to know it’s probably a name I should recognize, but it just wouldn’t click.

First, I grabbed my phone. Straight to the usual crossword solver sites, right? I typed in the clue, along with how many letters I was looking for. Sometimes those sites are a lifesaver, sometimes they’re a total bust. This time, I got a bunch of options, but nothing that felt immediately “right”. Lots of names I’d never heard of.

So, plan B. I opened up a new tab and went to the actual U.S. Open website. I figured they must have a list of past winners somewhere. I started clicking around, looking for a “history” section or something similar. It took a little bit of hunting, but I finally found it – a whole page dedicated to past champions!
Now, the tedious part. I started scrolling through the list, looking for those two-time winners. I kept my eyes peeled, and I figured, my crossword is most like going to give an older person, someone back in the day, so I skimmed the current players. I made a mental note of a few names that seemed promising, and I went to check some crossword forums to see if others had the same problem with any names.
A few of them I was like “Oh, yeah, that could fit!”. Finally, I found a name, and sure enough, I checked the crossword forums and it was a common answer! That had to be it.
I went back to my crossword, filled in the letters… and bam! It fit perfectly. Everything else around it started making sense, too. It was such a relief. Seriously, sometimes these crossword clues just drive me nuts.
It’s not exactly rocket science, but it felt good to finally crack that one. Now, next time I see that clue, I’ll be ready!
