Well now, if you ask me, there ain’t nothin’ more excitin’ than seein’ women get out there and show what they can do, especially in a place like football where folks thought only men could be runnin’ the show. But I tell ya, the times, they sure are changin’. Take the UFL for instance, the United Football League, where a bunch of women are breakin’ new ground as referees, makin’ their mark in the world of football like never before.
You see, the UFL, it’s got 10 officiatin’ crews this year, and among ’em, there’s a lady named Amanda Sauer, who’s been doin’ things no woman’s done before in the world of football officiatin’. Back in 2017, Amanda became the first female referee to officiate a Division I game when Morgan State visited Rutgers. Can you believe that? A woman, blowin’ the whistle in the big leagues! Sure as the sun rises, she’s shown that women can handle the pressure just like any man can.
Now, the thing about football is that it’s always been kinda tough for women to break into the sport, especially when it comes to officiatin’. Most people thought women ain’t got the stamina or the know-how to keep up with the game. But they was wrong, wasn’t they? Women like Amanda Sauer, they been showin’ folks that a woman can call the shots just as good as any man, and that ain’t just some talk, that’s the truth. Amanda’s even been part of the UFL playoffs, which is no small feat, I tell ya!
And she ain’t the only one, neither. There’s other women out there takin’ the field, like Tangela Mitchell-Ross and Robin DeLorenzo, both of ‘em were part of the 2022 USFL season, breakin’ down barriers and showin’ the world that women belong in football too. In fact, there’s been a steady rise in female referees all across the board, in leagues like the NBA, NFL, and even the UFL. More and more women are takin’ those whistles and makin’ calls, and that’s somethin’ to be proud of.
Now, if you ask me, it’s high time we saw more women in these roles. Football’s been a boys’ club for a long while, but I reckon the girls are catchin’ up. Look at Sarah Thomas, born in 1973, who’s now officiatin’ in the NFL. She broke that barrier and became the first woman to officiate a playoff game in the NFL. Ain’t that somethin’? And don’t forget about Krystle Apellaniz, who’s been officiatin’ games too. Women are risin’ up in ways they ain’t done before, and the world of football ain’t never gonna be the same.
But it ain’t just about the women who’ve made it to the top, it’s about all the young girls out there watchin’ these women and thinkin’, “Hey, if she can do it, so can I.” That’s the real power of it all, ain’t it? When a girl sees another girl doin’ somethin’ big, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. These women are settin’ an example, and that’s what makes them so important. They show that if you work hard and stick with it, you can achieve things people might not think possible for you.
And sure, it’s a tough job. Officiatin’ football takes guts, stamina, and a good sense of what’s goin’ on out on that field. It ain’t just blowin’ a whistle and yellin’ at folks. It’s about bein’ sharp, fair, and tough as nails, no matter who’s playin’ or what the stakes are. And these women, they’ve been doin’ all that and more. They’ve been showin’ the boys that they ain’t just playin’ around—they belong in the game too.
So, if you’re watchin’ the UFL this year or any other football game, keep an eye out for these ladies out there on the field. They’re makin’ history, one whistle blow at a time. And who knows, maybe one of these days, you’ll see a whole lot more women callin’ the shots in the world of football. And that’s somethin’ worth watchin’!
