Okay, so I wanted to mess around with some historical college football data, specifically the 2017 UGA football roster. I’m a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan, and that 2017 season was magical, so I figured it’d be fun to dig into the roster from that year.

First, I needed to find the data. I started by just Googling “uga roster 2017 football”. The top results give some basic information, but nothing I can get data with.
Digging Through Websites
Then, I started poking around. It was a bit of a mess, to be honest. I had to click through a bunch of different pages, check out different sections, and try to piece things together.
- I looked at the players section first.
- Saw a list with names.
- Next, I checked some of the tables, they had offense, defense, and special teams.
I looked at each player, noting their names, numbers, positions, and any other info listed, like height, weight, hometown, and class (freshman, sophomore, etc.). It was slow going, manually writing stuff down in my notebook.
Compiling My Notes
After a while of clicking and scrolling, I had a pretty good list going. It wasn’t perfect, and I’m sure I missed some walk-ons or maybe some details here and there, but it was a solid start. I mostly focused on the key players I remembered, like:
- Jake Fromm: The freshman quarterback who took over.
- Nick Chubb & Sony Michel: The amazing running back duo.
- Roquan Smith: The linebacker who was all over the field.
I jotted down their stats and any interesting tidbits I could find about them from that season.
The Final Result (My Version)
So, I didn’t end up with a perfect, perfectly formatted digital roster. What I did get was a handwritten list of players, with notes and stats, that really took me back to that 2017 season. It was more about the process of exploring and remembering than having a perfect dataset. I got to relive some of those great moments and appreciate the players who made that year so special. Maybe it’s not something I can easily share, but it’s definitely something I enjoyed putting together.
