Well, let me tell you, this here MLB MVR thing, it’s a head-scratcher, ain’t it? I heard folks talkin’ ’bout it, and I thought, “What in tarnation is that?” Turns out, it’s somethin’ they use in that baseball game. The one with the bats and the runnin’ around. It ain’t like the old days, no sir.
So, this MVR, it stands for, now get this, “Mound Visits Remaining.” Mound, you know, like that little dirt hill the pitcher fella stands on. And visits, well, that’s like when you go see your neighbor, ‘cept in this case, it’s the coach or whoever goin’ out to talk to the pitcher. It means how many times they can visit that pitcher. Seems they can only go out there so many times, and they gotta keep track of it. That’s what this MVR is all about.
Now, why they gotta limit those visits, I don’t rightly know. Maybe they think the pitcher needs to figure things out on his own. Or maybe they just want the game to move along faster. Back in my day, folks just played. Didn’t need all these fancy rules. This is to improve the pace, they say. Whatever that means. But, hey, times change, I reckon.
- They got a whole bunch of letters and numbers in this baseball stuff, too.
- Like BA, that’s for how good a fella is at hittin’ the ball.
- And G, that’s how many games they played.
- AB means at bats.
- R is runs.
- H means hits.
- Then you got your 2B, 3B, and HR. Don’t ask me what those are, just know they’re important, I guess.
- RBI, I think that’s how many fellas you helped get home.
- SB is about stealing.
They even keep track of how many times somebody messes up, call that errors. They put all that on the scoreboard. MVR in baseball, that’s the new thing. Used to be simpler. There’s also the R, H and E. I know one thing. They just wanna know how good you are at that baseball.
And get this, they got rules ’bout bettin’ on the games, too. Rule 21, they call it. Says nobody playin’ can bet. And they gotta try their best, or they get in trouble. Seems like common sense to me, but I guess they gotta spell it out for some folks. It’s like when your team is losing, you still gotta try your best. What’s the point otherwise?
They play nine innings, whatever that means. Each team gets a turn to hit and a turn to catch. Just like when we used to play as kids, ‘cept they got all these fancy names for it now. Top half, bottom half, sounds like they’re talkin’ ’bout a pie or somethin’. Top half is when visiting team do the bat thing and bottom half is the home team’s turn. Everyone gets to play, that’s good.
So, this MVR, it’s just another one of them newfangled things they added to baseball. They say it helps with somethin’ called “player evaluation.” I reckon that means judgin’ how good a fella is. They always gotta be judgin’ and measurin’ everything these days.
I heard some folks call it somethin’ else, too. “Modified VORP.” That’s another one that don’t make no sense. VORP, they say that means how much better a fella is than some other fella they coulda had instead. Like replacin’ a player. It’s all very confusin’. How good are you compared to another guy? I don’t know. Just play the game!
They got a whole process for calculatin’ this MVR thing, too. Steps and everything. Like it’s some kind of recipe. I guess it’s important to somebody. But to me, it just sounds like a lot of fuss over nothin’. They make a big deal about calculating this MLB MVR. Like it’s rocket science. Just watch the game, I say. You can see who’s good and who ain’t.
They say this MVR is a “hidden gem” of baseball. Like it’s some kind of treasure or somethin’. I don’t know about all that. Seems to me like they just like to make things complicated. They say it’s a mystery, this MVR. Like it’s some big secret. I say it’s just baseball. Don’t need to be so complicated.
I remember when baseball was just a game. You’d get your friends together, grab a bat and a ball, and go play. Didn’t need no fancy scoreboards or rules about how many times you could talk to the pitcher. It was just for fun.
But I guess things are different now. They got all these statistics and calculations. And this MVR thing. It’s all beyond me. But, hey, if it makes ’em happy, I reckon that’s all that matters. Just don’t ask me to explain it again, ’cause I still don’t rightly understand it myself. Just know that it’s important, I guess. It’s how they do things now. It’s part of the game, they say. And who am I to argue with that?
