Okay, so I was super pumped for the Wawrinka vs. Machac match. I’ve been following both players, and I really wanted to see how this one would play out. I decided I’d do more than just watch – I wanted to track some stats and see if I could pick up on any patterns.

First, I grabbed my notebook and pen – yeah, I’m old school like that. I jotted down the basic stuff: date, time, tournament, and the players’ names, obviously. Then, I decided what stats I wanted to track. I went with:
- First serve percentage
- Winners
- Unforced errors
- Break point conversions
I figured those would give me a pretty good overview of how the match was flowing.
The Match Begins!
As the match started, I was furiously scribbling. Every point, I marked down whether the first serve was in or out, if it was a winner, an unforced error…you get the idea. It was kind of hectic at first, especially during those long rallies, but I quickly got into a rhythm. I even made little notes about the type of shots – forehand winners, backhand errors, that sort of thing.
After each game, I took a quick breather to tally up the numbers for that game. This helped me see mini-trends, like if one player was suddenly making a lot more errors, or if their first serve percentage was dipping. It was also useful, so i can see at what stage of the game is one player is dominating the other.
Keeping Up
It was definitely challenging to keep up, especially when the points were fast and furious. There were a few times I had to rely on my memory (and the replays!) to make sure I got everything right. But overall, I think I did a pretty good job of keeping my stats accurate.
By the end of the match, I had pages of notes and numbers. I managed to see the whole picture. I saw Wawrinka’s experience shine, and it was so interesting.
It was definitely more engaging than just passively watching. I felt like I was way more involved in the match, and I picked up on things I probably wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. It was a lot of fun, and I’ll probably do it again for other matches!
