Alright, let’s talk about something I got into recently. It started pretty randomly, actually. I was just looking for something different to watch, got tired of the same old stuff popping up everywhere. Somehow, I stumbled onto the topic of Dominican movies, specifically stuff that came out in 2023.

It wasn’t like I was an expert or anything, far from it. I think I saw a name drop of some Dominican film in an online discussion, maybe? Can’t pinpoint it exactly. But it got me curious. I thought, “Okay, what’s happening in Dominican cinema right now? What did they put out last year?” So, I decided to just dive in and see what I could find.
First thing I did was just hit the search engines. You know the drill. Typed in things like “dominican films 2023”, “new movies dominican republic”, stuff like that. Got a bunch of results, news articles, some lists on different sites. It took a bit of sifting through, though. Information wasn’t all in one neat place.
I started making a mental list, well, actually scribbled some names down on a notepad next to my computer. Some titles kept coming up. It seemed like a mix of genres, which was cool to see. I remember noting down:
- A couple of comedies that seemed popular locally.
- One or two dramas that looked a bit heavier, more serious.
- I think there was a thriller or action flick mentioned too.
Finding them was the next challenge, honestly. It’s one thing to know a movie exists, another thing to actually watch it, especially from overseas. Some seemed to have limited releases. Finding versions with English subtitles was another hurdle for a few of them. Took some real digging.
I did manage to watch a couple eventually. One was a drama, pretty powerful stuff. Felt very real, you know? Different vibe from the usual Hollywood fare. The way people talked, the settings, it just felt grounded. Then I watched one of the comedies. It was funny, definitely had its moments, although I’m sure some of the humor was very specific to Dominican culture and probably flew over my head a bit. Still enjoyed it though.
So, after all that poking around, what’s the verdict? It was an interesting little project for myself. Showed me there’s a whole vibrant film scene there putting out diverse work in 2023. It’s not always easy to access from abroad, which is a bit of a downside. But the effort was worth it just to get a glimpse. Made me appreciate the different stories being told out there. Definitely something I might try to keep an eye on going forward, see what else pops up.
