So, I got this urge the other day to look back at the 2004 South Carolina football team. Can’t even remember exactly why, maybe just thinking about that era under Coach Holtz. Anyway, I decided to track down the actual roster from that year.

First thing I did, just hopped on my computer and typed the obvious into the search bar: 2004 South Carolina football roster. Pretty straightforward. Got a mix of results back, you know how it is. Some links looked like old news bits, maybe some fan discussion forums.
I thought about trying the official Gamecocks athletics website first. Sometimes they have archives. But honestly, navigating those official sites for stuff from almost twenty years ago can be a real pain. Sometimes things get moved, links break, or it’s just buried deep. So, I didn’t spend too much time there this time around.
My next thought usually goes to those big sports statistics websites. You know the ones, they keep records of practically everything. They’re often the quickest way to find old rosters and stats. So I tweaked my search a bit, maybe added the site name I usually check, or just clicked on one of the results that looked like it came from one of those databases.
And boom, that was the ticket. Found a site that had the full 2004 roster listed out pretty clearly. Took just a few minutes really.
Looking Through the Names
Once I had the list up, I scrolled through it. It’s funny how names can bring back memories.
- Seeing Syvelle Newton listed. Man, that guy was versatile. QB, WR, RB… seemed like he did a bit of everything.
- Troy Williamson, the receiver. Remember how fast he was? Always a deep threat.
- Defensive guys too, like Moe Thompson on the line.
- And of course, seeing Lou Holtz listed as the Head Coach. That was his second to last season in Columbia.
It wasn’t their best season ever, I think they went 6-5 or something like that, but still, seeing that roster brings back the feel of that specific time in Gamecock football. Different era, different players.
So yeah, that was my little trip down memory lane tracking down the 2004 roster. Wasn’t too hard, mostly just a quick search on the right kind of website. Just felt like sharing the process. Sometimes it’s fun to just dig up these old bits of info.
