Okay, so I was messing around with my golf clubs the other day, trying to figure out what setup works best for me. I’ve got this buddy who’s a huge Padraig Harrington fan, and he kept going on about how I should try to model my bag after him. So, I thought, why not give it a shot?

First off, let me tell you, I’m no pro golfer. Not even close. But I do enjoy getting out on the course and whacking some balls around. Anyway, this whole experiment started because I was having a heck of a time with my long irons. They just weren’t cooperating, you know? My buddy, he suggested I look into what Padraig Harrington uses, since he’s apparently some big-shot golfer from Ireland with a bunch of wins and stuff.
So I did some digging. Turns out, this Harrington guy uses a Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Utility iron. I figured, if it’s good enough for a pro, it’s gotta be worth a try, right? I went down to the local golf shop and picked one up.
Next, I started looking at his wedges. Now, I’ve always been pretty decent with my wedges, but I’m always up for an upgrade. Harrington uses the Wilson Staff Model Forged wedge. I managed to find one of those as well, and let me tell you, it feels pretty sweet in my hands. I’ve only tried it out a few times, but I think it might be a keeper.
I also found out that you can only have 14 clubs in your bag. I had no idea! I always thought you could just stuff as many in there as you wanted. Good thing I learned that before heading out to a serious game, or I would’ve looked like a real fool.
My Current Setup
So, after all this messing around, here’s what I’ve got in my bag right now:
- Driver: Some old driver I picked up on sale a while back. It’s nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.
- Woods: I’ve got a couple of decent woods that I’m pretty happy with.
- Irons: This is where things get interesting. I swapped out my long irons for that Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 Utility iron, just like Harrington. I also kept my regular irons from 5 through 9.
- Wedges: I’ve added the Wilson Staff Model Forged wedge to my collection, along with my trusty old sand wedge.
- Putter: My putter is ancient, but I’m so used to it that I can’t bring myself to replace it.
I’ve played a few rounds with this new setup, and I gotta say, I’m actually hitting the ball a bit better. That utility iron is a game-changer for me. I’m not saying I’m gonna be winning any tournaments anytime soon, but at least I’m not embarrassing myself as much on the course. And hey, maybe I’ll even impress my Harrington-fan buddy next time we play.
Anyway, that’s my little golfing adventure for now. I just thought it would be fun to share my experience of trying to set up my bag like a pro, even though I’m far from it. Maybe it’ll inspire some of you other amateur golfers out there to experiment with your own setups. You never know what you might discover!
