Okay, so I’ve been wrestling with this game, trying to get the darn size down. It was HUGE, like, embarrassingly big. So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. Here’s how I tackled the beast.

First Look – Finding the Culprits
First thing I did was just look at the build report. You know, the one Unity spits out after you build the thing? It’s kinda like a weight scale for your game. It shows you what’s taking up all the space.
Turns out, my textures were the biggest offenders. No surprise there, really. I had a bunch of high-resolution textures that were probably overkill for the style of my game.
Texture Tactics
So, texture time! I went through each one, one by one. This was the boring part, ngl.
- Compression: I played around with the compression settings. Unity has a bunch of options, and I found that some of them made a HUGE difference without making the game look like garbage.
- Max Size: I also messed with the “Max Size” setting. For a lot of the smaller textures, I realized I could shrink them down without any noticeable difference.
- Unused Stuff: I found a bunch of textures I wasn’t even using anymore! Old stuff, test stuff… GONE.
Audio Adventures
Next up was audio. Sound files can be sneaky space hogs.
I checked the compression settings, and change some setting on audio files, make them smaller.
The Leftovers
After textures and audio, it was time for the miscellaneous stuff.
- Scenes: make sure that I did not included any test scenes or old versions of levels in the build.
- Unused Assets: there are some plugins in unity store that can help detect unused assets, use them and clean those garbages.
Final Result
After all that, I managed to shrink the game size down by like… a LOT. It was a pain, and it took a while, but it was totally worth it. Now it’s a much more reasonable size, and I’m not ashamed to share it with people anymore.
So, if your game is a chunky boi, don’t despair! Just take it one step at a time, and you’ll get there. It’s all about finding those space-wasting culprits and showing them the door.
